health care

Hello everybody!

In our last English lesson we were talking about the public health care system in Austria.

Austria has public health care, meaning that essential health services are paid for by the government. I would like to give you my opinion on the following health services.

I think the removal of a tattoo which the patient says is causing him mental distress should not be paid by the government, because it was his own decision to get this tattoo. So if he decides that this tattoo is causing him mental distress, he should let it remove, but he has to pay it with his own money.

A cosmetic surgery on an actor’s large nose, which she claims is harming her career should not be part of the public health care system, because it doesn’t cause any physical or psychical problems.

A breast reduction on a 13-year-old overweight girl, who is being teased at school because of her breast size, should not either be paid by the state, because that’s to dangerous. If she really wants to stop the teasing at school, she should lose some weight. This has sometimes the side benefit that the breasts are getting smaller.

What do you think about this health services?

Yours,
Nadja
