Hello everybody!
I was reading an article the other day in the online edition of “BBC”
news, and it talks about the failed drug test of Maria Sharapova.
I thought you might be interested because some of you might like tennis.
First I would like to give you a short input: Maria Sharapova is one of
the highest paid female athletes. She is a Russian professional tennis player,
who is ranked world no. 7 by the Women’s Tennis Association.
Basically what the article says is, that sponsors have moved quickly to
distance themselves from Maria Sharapova after failing a drug test.
For this reason, Nike has suspended its relationship and the Swiss
watchmaker has cut its ties to Ms Sharapova.
It is also mentioned that brands now have to react faster to these types
of incidents. An independent sports consult said, “They are paranoid about
their image, and the slightest risk to their image, they run to the hills.”
It also says that Ms Sharapova said, that she had taken meldonium since
2006, on the advice of her family doctor.
What I have not understood was why meldonium only since 1st
January this year is declared as an illegal substance and that there has never
been a problem before.
What do you think about this incident?
